Great Salt Lake marshlands

The icy and desolate marshlands, where Utah Lake drains into the Great Salt Lake via the Jordan River, sparkled here and there with small groups of white waterbirds. From several hundred feet up these tiny, brilliant details of the wetlands' drab winter geography, who floated in flocks of a dozen or two, betrayed their animal-ness only through occasional flightless wing stretches. Unfazed as the birds were by our noise or speed or size their stretches took on the affect of a disinterested yawn as we passed low over the marshes on our landing approach.
